SDCEA OFFERS RENEWABLE ENERGY CHOICE

There is a lot of discussion regarding renewable energy sources as part of the mix to provide power to homes and businesses. Wind-generated power is in the headlines on a weekly basis.

Through our whole-sale supplier, Tri-State Generation and Transmission (Tri-State), wind power is available.

Tri-State will go out on the market and secure wind power for SDCEA to resale to our members who choose to purchase wind-power. The option to receive wind-power will be voluntary. Members electing to receive it will have a surcharge added to their monthly bill in addition to the normal rates they pay. While the cost of generating renewable energy, such as wind-power, has come down in recent years, the cost of producing it is still more expensive than current power generation sources.

Members who choose to purchase wind-power will buy it in 100 kWh blocks. For each block of wind-power, there will be a $0.40 surcharge added to the member's monthly bill. The surcharge will be in addition to the appropriate rate for the type of service served. The blocks will be billed on each monthly bill. A member may sign up for any number of blocks but must commit for a minimum of one year. The member will be billed for the number of blocks they committed to regardless of their actual kWh consumption for the month.

An example of how it might work: The average monthly bill for a SDCEA member is 780 kWh, for a bill of $109.15 plus the appropriate taxes. A member using that could sign up for 7 blocks, which would mean the vast majority of their power would come from wind-power. Their monthly surcharge would be $2.80. The bill, pre-tax, would be $111.95 after the Renewable Energy charge was added. Since that kWh figure is an average, there would be months when consumption would be higher, maybe 1,000 kWh. The surcharge would still be $2.80. The flip side would hold true as well. The months that the consumption was below 700 kWh, say 500 kWh, the surcharge would remain at $2.80.
