2018 Washington, D.C. Youth Tour
Every June, more than 1,600 junior and senior high school students from across the United States embark on a chaperoned week-long, all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. Sangre de Cristo Electric participates every year by sending a student(s) to represent the cooperative. The 2018 Youth Tour will be June 7 – 14.
The Youth Tour opens big doors for small town kids. For some it may be their first airplane ride, first visit to Washington D.C., first time to make friends from outside their community. For everyone it provides an opportunity to see government in action, shake hands with senators and members of congress, and have experiences that will be remembered for a lifetime. It’s an opportunity to meet kids from other places in rural America and make new friends from all over the country, while learning about history outside of a textbook.
Apply for the Youth Tour
To be eligible, students must currently be a sophomore, junior or senior in high school and have a parent or guardian that is a member of SDCEA. Applicants must submit a 300 – 500 word essay. The deadline for submitting your application is 4:30 pm on Friday, January 12, 2018.
Co-op youth have loved participating in the Youth Tour for more than 50 years. As a previous student on the trip declared, “Youth Tour is a fabulous opportunity and a once in a lifetime experience. I cannot express how thankful I am for this chance to discover so much about our national capital.” Another said, “My feet hurt, but my mind was full.” Can you think of a better way to spend a week?
