Jan. 12 deadline for Youth Tour applications

Youth Tour Applications Due Soon

High school sophomores, juniors or seniors whose family’s residential electricity is supplied by Sangre de Cristo Electric Association, Inc. are invited to apply for an expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. June 7-14, 2018.

Travel, accommodations and food are paid for during the trip. Attendees will be responsible only for incidental purchases they may wish to make.

The trip offers youth an opportunity to gather with other student representatives from electric cooperatives throughout the state. The tour begins in Denver with representatives from the Colorado Rural Electric Association. Attendees will visit the Colorado State Capitol in Denver among other stops, then fly to Washington, D.C.

In Washington, D.C., among the sites visited include the U.S. Capitol; the Smithsonian museums; a visit to Ford’s Theater; visits to the 9/11, Vietnam, Korean and Lincoln memorials; the Holocaust museum and many other destinations.

The tour has been a fun and educational trip sponsored by electric cooperatives throughout the country since the 1960s. More than 1700 youth are expected to visit the U.S. Capitol through the program this summer. Other organizations that sponsor the tour include the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and the Colorado Electric Educational Institute.

If you are interested in current events or have big dreams of seeing the country, if you like history or want to shake hands with your congressman, if you’ve never flown in a plane but want to travel, if you want to meet new people from Colorado and across the country, then the Washington, D.C. Youth Tour is for you.

Applications will be accepted at SDCEA offices in Buena Vista until 4:30 p.m. Jan. 12 for the June 7-14, 2018 program.
