Notice of an IT Security Incident

Dear SDCEA Member,

We want to share what happened during a recent interruption of normal business operations, what it means for you, and the steps we are taking to protect your information.

What happened

Our monitoring systems recently alerted staff to suspicious activity in SDCEA’s information technology network. We immediately secured our IT servers and took them offline, which temporarily interrupted bill payment and phone services. Cybersecurity and forensic experts then conducted a thorough investigation to determine how the incident occurred and assessed its scope.

Your electric service was never at risk

At no time was your electric service or the electric grid affected.

What we know about your information

At this time, we have no evidence that financial or other sensitive personal information was compromised or misused. We are notifying you out of an abundance of caution.

What we’re doing

We have strengthened our security measures and will continue to monitor our systems closely. Bill payment and phone services have been fully restored. We will share any new information with members as we learn it.

Staying safe online

We always encourage members to follow a few simple habits to protect their information:

Be cautious of unexpected calls, texts, or emails claiming to be from SDCEA, especially ones that demand immediate payment or threaten disconnection. SDCEA will never ask for your full Social Security number, bank account, or card information by phone, text, or email.
Avoid clicking links or opening attachments in messages you weren’t expecting. If you’re unsure whether a message is from us, call us directly at 844-395-2412.
Review your account statements regularly and report anything unfamiliar to your financial institution.
