SDCEA to send five youth to Washington, D.C.

Salida High School student Karen Wilkins and Buena Vista High School students Delilah Sander, Levi DeWalt, Quentin Doke and A.J. Smethers will represent Sangre de Cristo Electric Association, Inc. at the 2018 Youth Tour held June 2018 in Washington, D.C. They will join students from around the state in Denver for a day to get acquainted and learn about rural electric systems in Colorado before boarding a plane and flying off to our nation’s capital.

Sponsored by their local rural electric cooperatives, students from all over the United States to learn about and tour sites around the D.C. area. They also will meet with energy industry and government officials. More than 1,700 students attended the event in 2017. A full day is spent on Capitol Hill meeting with the Colorado congressional delegation and eating lunch in the cafeteria with congressional staffers. The students are introduced to issues faced by rural electric cooperatives on a state as well as national level.

This is an all-expenses paid trip and the winners are selected based on their application and an essay on why they would be a good candidate for the experience.The Youth Tour is open to all area high school sophomores, juniors or seniors whose parents or guardians are members of SDCEA. Application packets are available for download from our website www.myelectric.coop each year in early October. The deadline for application submission is the beginning of January.
